Workshop Overview
| Biomedical research is rapidly
becoming data-intensive as investigators are generating and using
increasingly large, complex, multidimensional, and diverse datasets. The Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K)
initiative was established to enable the biomedical research community to
use the various types of Big Data for research. As a special program under
BD2K, the objective of NIH Mentored Research Scientist Development Award
(K01) is to support for intensive research career development under the
guidance of an experienced mentor, or sponsor, in biomedical Big Data
Science. The specific goals of our workshop are: 1)  to expose the PhD students and postdoc researcher to K
award opportunities (it is never too early to start applying for NIH grants). 2)  to provide the current BD2K K01 awardees a platform to
present their research progress and engage collaborations. 3)  to help guide the mentored scientist awardees to
obtain competitive new research project grants (e.g., R01) in the area of Big
  Data science.
The long-term goal of this workshop is to
continue to foster the growth and development of mentored data scientists among
PSB attendees. This workshop is an excellent fit
for several groups of PSB attendees, including current PhD students and
postdocs (future K awardees), current K01 and early career awardees, and current middle
career/senior investigators (K award mentors). This session will complement various recent
tracks of the conference, including precision medicine, multi-omics
integration, and novel methods to connect genotype-phenotype. |
